It's sort of like how severe frostbite is described. At a certain point, the nerves die and the brain realizes it is no longer beneficial to send pain signals. All that's left to look forward to is that last burst of adrenalin and endorphins, but it's probably not coming until late October.

Edmund Lava posted:Is this the first year the general election started before the Olympics? Going to be weird seeing the candidates try to pry attention away from that. Seeing people literally swimming through raw sewage and contracting diseases is a powerful argument for the need for competent government and infrastructure investment. But street gangs wantonly mugging people and maybe even murdering them, potentially all caught live on camera, is the type of thing that could benefit a xenophobic strong man candidate.

greatn posted:Why does Jihnson seem to take more from Clinton than Trump in all these? I really don't think any significant portion of these are Democrats or liberals or even Bernie-or-busters, so it's not cutting into the base vote of Hillary. They are should-be-gimme Trump votes going somewhere else, and that's all that's really important. And I don't think most of them will stick to their guns about a third party when it comes down to the actual voting, so that's even better news for Hillary.

Mr Interweb posted:While I'm very glad that Trump is getting trashed by Hillary in the polls this week, Trump was actually leading her a week ago. Here's my question: what made those people who supported Trump no more than a few DAYS ago, suddenly change their minds? I mean yeah, yeah Trump said a whole bunch of noxious poo poo. So what? He's been spewing garbage like that ever since he started running (and for, you know, the the past 40 years). "I know Trump said he hated muslins, but I never thought he'd actually attack one!" Basically, if you remember back to sixth grade science class, where you learned about constructive and destructive interference of light waves, Hillary's campaign has focused into a powerful laser beam. I think she'll maintain a lead, though not so dominant, over the next three months, and this week will be looked back upon as her high point. But I'd love to be wrong, and see her up the score.

As long as he isn't entertaining, viewership won't be there and damage can be somewhat mitigated. He is woefully unprepared to spar on national policy or geo-political intricacies. I don't think anyone sees the debates as a chance for him to gain ground.

Harrow posted:Lots of my "voting for Clinton but not too happy about it" friends are pretty worried about Ken Salazar's appointment as her transition chief due to his pro-fracking (and anti-any sort of fracking regulation) positions. I mostly agree that it's a pretty big misstep but I'm wondering a) how much it matters and b) what people who are generally pro-Clinton can/should do about it. Of the reliable methods of actually producing sufficient baseload power, nuclear has the least carbon emissions, and natural gas has second least. The U.S. has been able to significantly reduce its carbon output in the last decade, and it is mostly due to a transition to natural gas from coal/oil. True, there are valid points to be made regarding fracking regulations and avoidable emissions and negative local geologic effects, but those opposed to fracking generally are opposed to it entirely, instead of having specific addressable concerns. In short, ask your friends what would be better than natural gas (keep in mind that getting a nuclear plant online takes several years, if they are not also opposed to nuclear) and see if they say something reasonable. Chances are they won't, in which case you can educate them or ignore them.

McCloud posted:I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty hard about the polls. Not because Trump might win (it will take a miracle for that to happen at this point) but because Hillary's double digit lead might make democrat voters complacent. The democrats have a chance to actually win the house. If Hillary does well at the debates, if Trump continues being Trump, then the House might legit be in play, and even if it's just 2 years, with the senate and the house on their side, and with no Blue Dogs, the sky's the limit to what the democrats can accomplish. With this mindset, you have an outside possibility of being pleasantly surprised, and you won't take years off of your expected lifespan from the stress of worrying about the House.
