I am almost certain Margit randomly varies the timing on his swings even if it's the same attack from instance to instance. If that's the case that's part of why that fight is so difficult.

I'm not complaining though, I love it, been awhile since a Fromsoft game tested me like the Margit fight did.

The large windup attack absolutely varies its timing unless you gain distance to force him to use a charge. It's not the first time they've used the trick, but it's making the fight especially tedious when combined with the outrageous backhopping.

I'm playing a Prisoner so the backhop didn't bother me, I just fired off a couple glintswords while waiting for him to charge me again.

Margit also has options as to what move he'll do next, I've never seen a boss combo into so many different strings of the same moves before in a Soulsborne. Some of his attacks will also change depending on the distance you are from him.

I've made it to about half health so far.

What I really love is that he'll cancel a combo string to use another attack if it's appropriate to your positioning/actions. For example, I've seen him throw a single dagger into a charge instead of double daggers.

Yes, it's your rig loading the next area. The data streaming isn't as slick as it is in BotW, but considering how big the world is and how much is packed into it, kinda understandable.

1. It's annoying I get only 10 messages before the oldest fades away, I've been proactively deleting any that don't get interactions

2. Has anyone seen if there are any actual secret doors in the game? After about 10 hours I haven't found any despite dozens of messages promising that there's a secret door. Attacking, rolling, interacting -- none of them reveal secret doors (if there are any).

Margit is Pontiff Sullyvahn almost 1:1 which is a boss they specifically moved later in 3 and was still a giant progression block for even good players. Making a boss like that the first story directed boss seems like an almost very clear “gently caress you for wanting difficulty settings” which I don’t think is a good call on From’s part.

Margit is way more fluid than the Pontiff. Particularly the knife throws are honestly the biggest issue for that fight, he fucks up anyone trying to flask or cast, and it means you want to stay closer to him than you'd want to otherwise -- which opens you up for the spin attack.

The trick I had for dealing with him without poison/bleed strats was to watch for when the camera would do this little "zoom", that's typically the tell for when he starts his actual attack instead of holding his preparation.

Kalé at the Church of Elleh (right north of the start) sells throwing items and a crafting kit that lets you craft fire pots etc. He also sells a hint that leads to some sorceries.

Aside from that just core unparking/high performance plans and MSI mode for most devices as sort of bog-standard performance tweaks.

To be fair, for other games I don't really consider 60 frames acceptable, but it's long since been a thing that this is simply what Souls-likes do and so I deal with it. Its the only thing I play with a controller anyway, so the more sluggish inputs don't feel so bad because they match closely with what controllers feel like even on most modern consoles, since titles still like to cap at 60 (and people use horrifically slow TVs to game on for some reason).

If you need links for any of this let me know, but I feel like the internet is replete with instructions on how to do the above.

Edit: Running the controller at 1000 Hz wired for consistency and shaving off another 10 ms is nice too. Can't say I notice it too much largely because a 60 frame game isn't that insanely responsive that you would feel that readily, but what the hell.

Thanks, will try this stuff out. You'd think a 3070Ti and an i7-10700k would be able to run a 60 fps with zero hitching but apparently not.
