this morning the nurse at walmart asked us if we were getting our first shots together because of the delta wave that's coming, and i played off it it like 'yeah its going to be ridiculous.' she tried to compliment us by saying that if more people would do what we were doing then we could get this under control soon. without flinching i referenced the cdc's increasingly exponential, vertical looking graphs and then she admitted she doesnt really have hope anymore, actually.

after our booster we then picked up some box fans for the corsi boxes im building for my partner and their students so they may have less of a chance to die when they return to school in a few weeks.

another corsi cube Q:

Is the reason you can't just slap one furnace filter on the intake side of the fan due to drag/air resistance overloading the fan motor? Would be a lot smaller footprint that way.

nah, in fact someone went so far as to do some extensive testing to show even if you tried to overload the fan it still wouldnt be a fire-hazard.

you can do that [single filter corsi] just fine but they find that the more surface area there is for filtration the more cfm the entire unit can process

edit;
using the page snipe for more corsi box reading:
https://www.texairfilters.com/how-a-merv-13-air-filter-and-a-box-fan-can-help-fight-covid-19/
-the og corsi box design--a boxfan & filter; author experiments with wider and wider filters to show air movemement increases with surface area

https://www.texairfilters.com/a-variation-on-the-box-fan-with-merv-13-filter-air-cleaner/
-this link shows the full corsi-cube
-merv13 filters are often sold in box-quantites only, so with that in mind i built 2 boxes for ~$145 usd in filters. the fans (~$20/ea) & duct-tape (~$10) mean that each box was ~$90.

https://chemicalinsights.org/wp-content/uploads/DIY-Box-Fan-Report-2021.pdf
-17 page pdf of testing that determines; a) this works b) its no fire-hazard

hey respirator crew people, question or two.

1) where is the mega-post with all the respirator advice? like babby's first respirator attempt stuff

2) my friend working in a COVID unit decided of her own accord to try a 3M 6200 series with P100s instead of an N95 because she trusts it more, but she says it hurts her face a lot. i feel like her head is pretty average sized, has a relatively small nose, so i'm not really clear on what could be going wrong there. is there [a] anything she should try re: adjusting a 6200, or [b] a different model people have generally found to be more comfortable?

thanks!

1) quoted in the first post under PPE

2) the 3M 6200 looks like its moulded plastic style; your friend should try a silicon 1/2 mask like 3M's secure click or Honeywell's RU8500 series. ive worn mine (RU8500) for 4+ hours at a time with no discomfort

make sure to reference the sizing chart to make sure that your friend is getting a mask that fits properly, too.
