If the forest section of Hockenheim had never existed nobody would be saying 'ugh it's such an awful circuit bulldoze it and salt the earth'. The track suffers from the comparison with what had been there before but it isn't any worse than half the tracks on the current F1 calendar.

The track is almost as good as you are ever going to get from a purpose-built F1 circuit in the 21st century. People were pointing out the cut-n-paste sections from other circuits literally from the day of the track map being revealed. The whole track feels like one of those dumb lazy magazine articles about THE ULTIMATE F1 CIRCUIT made from all the corners everyone likes tagged together but missing the point completely.

Hell the 200m record was a 20.6. A time he could beat at age 15. The money, training, science and professionalism that goes into all sports now is way more advanced then what it was back in the day. I see the old grand prix drivers as half daredevil half sportsman. A poo poo load of bravery and a good amount of talent, but not compared to todays stars. The effect of today's sports psychology/nutrition/fitness aspect alone would see 50s drivers getting completely crushed by their modern equivalents. 1500quidporsche posted:The family thing is new but it makes a certain amount of sense since you have a guy that has a lot of cash, free time now that his career is over, he's now got a kid and knows what the kid has to do to get into the sport. IIRC Berger said it was the best circuit he'd ever raced on. Even so, no UK circuit other than Silverstone meets the FIA requirements to hold a Grand Prix at present. Pretty sure Donington doesn't have to worry about noise restrictions too much since the track literally sits at one end of the runway to East Midlands International .
