aras agalarov (who setup the meeting) is a front for russian mafia money. prevezon holdings is owned by denis katsyv and a collection of proxies, likely fronts for russian mafia. denis katsyv is the son of petr katsyv, ex russian transport minister and close associate of putin. the lawyer don jr met with works on behalf of prevezon and is an outspoken opponent of the magnitsky act. the magnitsky act is named for the lawyer who was killed after uncovering fraud involving prevezon holdings. he worked for hermitage capital, an american investment firm mostly active in moscow that was unwillingly involved in the fraud

preet bharara was heading a civil case against prevezon on behalf of hermitage and the us government. after he was fired (by trump) earlier this year prevezon and the us attorney's office settled the case

there's clearly some quid pro quo here, right?

You're thinking of Litvininenko, who got poisoned with Polonium in Britain for talking poo poo about Putin. Magnitsky uncovered a theft committed by Putin's friends of 230 million dollars from the Russian government. He was arrested in Moscow, then thrown into a terrible prison for a year and didn't receive any medical treatment for several acute illnesses, then was beaten to death 7 days before the government had to charge him or release him. Then he was charged and convicted of the crimes relating to the theft he uncovered. After he was dead.

He worked for some rich American dude that got really pissed off about it and lobbied for the Magnitsky Act to specifically punish all the people connected to his employee's death.

`Red Notice` by Bill Browder is about the events surrounding the Magnitsky thing. It's terribly written (it's an autobiography) but it's a pretty good look into how corrupt Russia is

a bunch of conservative canadian outlets are cheering the end of nafta because apparently cufta (an earlier us/canada free trade agreement) was never repealed; just made irrelevant by nafta. cufta is also not unilaterally cancellable so trump can't withdraw from it. the theory is cufta is more advantageous than nafta because of stronger protections against punitive tariffs. this of course ignores that trump is just gonna pretend cufta isn't a thing
