I distinctly remember telling my mom when I was reading Xanth at like 10 that it wasn't a sex thing, it was just a joke and now I am very embarrassed.

You're really shouldn't be, Piers Anthony's Xanth writing was calculated to make the grossness seem normal and unobjectionable to kids in a way that makes me feel sick to my stomach in retrospect. It's really, really awful, and I ate it up at 10 as well. Not a kid's fault at all for not seeing that it was inappropriate.

that would make sense if it was a general discussion about xanth, yes. but i distinctly remember discussing with my mom how in this series the satyrs or something had to collect the panties of young girls but it totally wasn't for sex it wasn't that kind of book series. so i'm still pretty embarrassed.

Fair enough, my sympathy for the embarassment.

I would just let my kids read Redwall if they liked it and talk to them about stereotypes and how texts can be fun but flawed. It's good to introduce kids to the idea that you can think critically about what messages something sends and not have to totally disavow it and salt the earth behind you. I think a lot of adults grow up still having the inability to process that something they like can have flaws and it's still okay to like those things, leading to endless YA twitter level discourse. (Yes, there are things it is reasonable to reject entirely for their flaws, especially in regards to reinforcing real life bigotry, and that's also a good conversation to have.)

The actual problem was that trusting a text AI to detect when someone was writing about that turned out to be unreliable, to say the least. And how this in turn led to invasiveness where many people expected privacy.
If it detected a flag, it literally shut down and called a human moderator to read your story and verify you weren't doing anything bad. Referring to a child character's age, in any context, would often trip the flag. Sometimes the AI would decide to veer into sexual content unprompted and it get flagged on its own. Other times sexual content would get flagged with no mention of children, and now you have some stranger reading your weird private porn fic. Certain words like "melon" would trigger a flag. At one point, the word "horse" would trigger a flag.

It wasn't as simple as just slapping an anti-CSAM filter on and driving out a bunch of obvious pedophiles.

Also it turned out the dataset it had been trained on included a whole bunch of fetish fic including rape and pedo stuff so it wasn't just a matter of the AI learning from users- it was also springing that poo poo on people who didn't want it because it was already in the data.

I've read lots of good art projects that are about worldbuilding as an excuse for illustration, or speculative biology, or horror, but the thing that makes them good isn't that they have a ton of unnessecary details, it's that they are executed with creativity and passion, and have a unifying theme or aesthetic that helps it hang together. I think even something that is specifically an exercise in making up and sharing a world is carried by things other than just raw worldbuilding, in this way.

(Rust and Humus is a really beautiful one that's all about endings and beginnings.)

The anatomy of a moral panic is to identify a real issue (child abuse, human trafficking, drug overdoses, etc) and then redirect energy and outrage away from a complicated, difficult to solve issue (abuse of authority by trusted family or community members, the failures of the immigration system/misogyny/capitalism, a broken healthcare and social service system) to a conveniently already mostly powerless scapegoat.

The Satanic Panic came in the wake of increased cultural awareness of child abuse as a thing and redirected suspicion away from people it would be inconvenient to suspect or inconvenience like parents in respected families, respected members of the community like clergy, and other potential authority figures in a position to abuse the trust of a child to a convenient Other of evil scheming daycare workers that want to undermine God and the American family. It turns something that could actually threaten the status quo into a reason the status quo is not only in no way involved, but actually under attack by these evil outsiders!

In this fantasy, women are replacable and beneath them. If he doesn't leave the date, he prioritizes her, and gives away that he isn't so central to her that she'll simply do anything he wants and put up with whatever he does. In the fantasy, it is also trivial for him to find other women, because he is so important and women want him so much. The inferiority and availabilty of women is central to this mindset, and this collective chest beating about how this is obviously how they would act and obviously right helps reinforce to them that it is the correct worldview.

But yes, it's also goofy as hell.

So does these reactionaries simply pretend this kind of content doesn't exist? They seem to make the classic mistake of comparing the best example of the thing they like to the worst examples of the things they hate.

For instance they hate the inclusion of queer characters in western media but don't actually compare queer media between western comics and manga. Instead they seem to pretend that western media shoehorns LGBT stuff in to "virtue signal" and manga just dispenses with it altogether. Western comics insert Mary Sues while manga has "reasonable" depictions of women.

There's also a great amount of irony in the fact that one of the most popular current anime/genres seems to be "Iseki' which is basically a story about some Goony Goon getting teleported to Dungeons and Dragons universe and of course all his Goony skills come in tremendously useful in this new universe. Yet we are to assume these derivative works are somehow " superior" to their western counterparts?

When one of the Guilty Gear devs said confirmed they decided to officially write Bridget as a trans woman a whole bunch of western nerds started a conspiracy theory that it was an evil rogue western translator lying about his works. They are really attached to the conservative paradise Japan that exists in their fantasies.
