As far as I know this is the first time we have seen the MAGA guys, when they show up to fight the group that the artist has gone out his way to define as the enemy. I would say he's accidentally created pro right wing militia propaganda, but I'm not sure there is anything accidental about it. Seriously, just look at the color comics, it's indistinguishable from "sheepdog" propaganda.

I'm pretty sure that prediction will hold up.

The federal timetable was supposed to be 20 million doses administered by the end of 2020, estimated doses given at this point is about 4 million. We are only at 20% of where we are supposed to be. If anything, Joe's prediction is looking hella optimistic.

I mean, yeah, that is kind of how it works. Once you take that vial out of the freezer it's use it or lose it. When I went in yesterday for my first shot the registration people were all worked up about the fact that the doctor who was on the schedule before me hadn't shown up and they couldn't get ahold of her. So they called down to the Emergency Department and literally said "hey if anyone down there wants to get theirs now send them up."

(Turns out the doctor was working in the ED at the moment and thought her appointment was at a different time and the misunderstanding was cleared up and no dose was wasted.)

This is how I got mine last week. At the end of vaccine clinic for the day, they had x extra doses from no shows. They just started calling the floors saying any clinician who wanted one should come down, first come first serve till they ran out.

That said, the cartoon is clearly about how the Trump administration hosed up the rollout. States received far smaller amounts then planned because the federal government failed to tell Pfizer on where to ship the vaccine. It's why the distribution is so far behind, doses were been sitting in Pfizer's warehouse waiting for shipping instructions.

Same as with Barr, the second Trump turns on someone, MAGA world unpersons them instantly regardless of how much they liked them previously. They now regards Pence as the worst sort of traitor, because Trump wanted Pence refuse to certify the electors and name "alternative electors" to declare Trump won.

I can't imagine Pence is happy that his 4 years of bootlicking service was rewarded by Trump sending an armed lynch mob after him. Trump explicitly told his cult that they needed to "show strength" to the weak republicans. Pence's family was at the capital with him, several members of the MAGA insurrections were chanting "Where's Pence?" There is not a doubt in my mind that they would have killed him if they found him.

Similar to how the Unite the Right Klan rally in Charlottesville seemed like a possible inflection point at first, a chance for the right to look at their plate and see what they were eating. Biden is a bland old white guy, the GOP has trouble whipping it's base into a death-frenzy about him compared to other Democrats. First, it will be a cold day in hell before the GOP ever puts money towards schools or roads, instead of payoffs for defense contractors and the wealthy. On the one hand, I want to say "excellent avatar/post combo." On the other hand, "build and maintain a merchandising empire" was, if not Garfield's original reason, that's certainly the reason now, and it certainly does that.

It really was Garfield's original reason. Prior to Garfield, Jim Davis had toiled away on strip about anthropomorphic insects for a few years without distribution going beyond low double digits at best. He was dispirited when, some editor gave him the advise, "your art is good and your jokes are funny, but no one likes bugs." Jim then resolved to create the most commercial strip he could, and every design decisions was made from that framework. Literally the only reason it's about a cat is he noted that there were a number of popular dogs in comics like Snoopy and Maramaduke, but no cats. I don't like Garfield, but I admire it's purity. The perfect commercial vehicle, it's market calculations matched only by its ubiquity.

Hell, I remember back even in the early 10's, "pro-family" conservatives weren't exactly shy about their intentions. Nowadays they've softened it down to this dog-whistle bullshit, so if you call them out on it they can pivot to "No, you see, we don't hate them, we love them, we want what's best for them!"

I mean, the formulation "I'm doing this horrible thing to group x because I love group x" has been stock for conservatives since forever. Aside from the fact it implicitly cast themselves as parents scolding children, it's let them be as lovely and abusive as they want while telling themselves they're the good guys.
