Those who have already played further: without spoiling specifics, how viable is a mage build this time around? I started an astrologist and so far have been plinking away at mobs with my basic spell. I never played a mage before on Souls games, I always went with some kind of warrior type, so I wanted something different.

I've been playing a prisoner and the starting spell has been wrecking dudes up through Margit. Seems pretty powerful, just slow to cast. That you can walk and cast makes it far more dynamic than previous games imo.

Also using a long sword in the other hand.

It's like Blackreach from Skyrim except with ancient mesopotamian ruins spread throughout and guarded by ghost vikings

The area has a pre festival version including a boss that are no longer accessible once the festival starts. It's not really that big a deal IMO but if you want to do everything and didn't go there before you locked yourself out. Once it's started there's no rush to actually do it

i just went back to try that boss again after getting stomped at lower level and oh boy is the new boss insane

also summoning for him was impossible, every sign disappeared by the time it showed up. although if you wanted to help you would be grabbed immediately. never seen a from game with that rapid of summoning.

I finally beat Margit at level 37 as a pure mage, felt really good to not get owned. Already have +4 spell slots which is pretty sweet, and now two talisman slots. Still haven't found any amazing mage gear besides the gravity staff. Still leveling the demi-human staff as the stats aren't good enough to switch to it yet. Some of the mage armour sets I'm seeing online look amazing, but I think you don't find those until you are level 50+.

Also, my favorite Ashes so far are a tie between the spear skeletons, who rise up when killed just as they do to you, and the demi-human pack who are amazing at distracting the enemy.

i mainlined that gravity staff after finding it super early following that teleport and havent stopped using it at level fifty. its spell adjust is just so drat high
