You mention Ann Coulter under Michael Savage entry, she should probably get her own entry as well, just because she is probably going to come up a LOT.

Another thing that should probably be mentioned is freerepublic and conservapedia, along with links to their mock threads.

-The Takers are now in the majority, that's why we lost (sort of changing the "47%" to 51% instead)

-"It's not your Mom and Dad's traditional (WHITE) America anymore (Dick Morris, Bill O'Reilly and others). They outnumber us now."

-Romney lost because he wasn't a True Conservative and didn't get True Conservatives to turn out for him as much as needed.

-Romney ran a virtually flawless campaign and did everything he needed to, you goddam True Conservatives hosed us by not turning out for him because My Ideological Purity

-Romney had all the mojo and momentum but lost it when he didn't attack Obama on Benghazi, WHY DIDN'T HE DO THAT (this is like a ubiquitous talking point now, I heard it first from Krauthammer on Fox's election coverage but it's everywhere now)

I absolutely love the "They outnumber us now" talking point. I heard Bill O'Reilly saying "The White Estabishment is now the minority" and I actually agreed with him. So my father and I always seem to get into debates about the state of the media. He listens to conservative radio, reads the drudge report, and watches Fox News religiously. He was absolutely obsessed with Glen Beck, viewing him as 100% right.

He admits that Fox does have a conservative bias, but it "doesn't even begin to remove the liberal bias of the other networks" so there is nothing wrong with that.

My biggest problem though is that he keeps going on about how the Drudge Report is 100% unbiased because it just posts links to articles.

Does anyone have any tips for things I can tell him that will back up my side of the argument that the media's focus on sensationalism and ratings generation makes it so that you can't base your political ideals around what they say, especially Fox News, Conservative Talk Radio and the Drudge Report?

For context, I explained to him that I have based my views on the current political climate on History, and actually looking up the issues that are brought up.(Most of which turn out to be outright lies by the media, or things being blown out of proportion. Like Obama-phones, or how much of an "absolute failure" the Stimulus was. [hint: it was beneficial]) His response was to agree with me that that looking issues up was the best way to know what is going on, which is why he reads the Drudge Report.

One argument you could make is that the way that Matt Drudge chooses to emphasize certain articles and de-emphasize others is what causes the site to have a bias. It's not the links themselves that are biased, it's Matt Drudge's presentation of them. Argue that if he just posted pure text links with no emphasis on any one article, then the site could be considered unbiased.

(Obviously it would still be biased for many other reasons, but hopefully this argument will help your dad see that Drudge is, at the very least, not an unbiased source of news.)

In regards to "coming apart at the seams" I think of it using an analogy: the Republican Party is a large block of concrete, and in this last election it was smashed with a sledgehammer. The block now has huge, visible cracks in it, and is internally fractured, but it's stable so long as no weight is put on it. Unfortunately for the Republicans, the 2014 and especially 2016 elections will be putting a hell of a lot of weight on the block, and will quite possibly shatter it.

Hey, look at that, MSNBC loving called it! They just picked the wrong commercial that would send conservatives into a tizzy, that's all.:haw:

Seriously, I'm kind of irritated that very few articles I see are pointing out how goddamn predictable the right wing's outrage is; the MSNBC story broke less than a week ago.

E: Sanjay Gupta maybe? That's literally all I can think of, god drat CNN has gone to poo poo.

AC is alright, but Gupta at least tacitly endorses pseudoscience way too much for me to like him. But then, that's one of my big pet issues, misleading people about medicine. He really fits with CNN, going for flash over substance with little to no critical thought. "Wow, maybe eating avocados cures cancer, who can say," etc.
Ah, I'm sad to hear he goes for some of the pseudoscience stuff.

I mentioned Gupta because I remembered that he was willing to admit he was wrong on marijuana and I also remembered that he did a good job explaining how insane it was that Michael Jackson was taking Propofol as a way to sleep. For reference, he did it by showing Propofol being used in a hospital setting. Seriously, it's loving scary how fast that stuff works.:stare:

E: I guess that might fall under "flash", but it was a good visual demonstration to me why Jackson's doctor okaying Propofol as a sleep aid was a completely insane decision.

Bakery owners don't have to fear violence and lynchings from gay customers. Also, being a KKK member is a choice, being gay is not. But this is pretty much par for the course from Branco.

Even taking the cartoon at face value:
If they're not being assholes, sure, go ahead and bake them a cake and take their money. Business is business, and their money is just as valid as everyone else's. Hell, go ahead and enjoy the fact that you took money from racist assholes to help your own business, that's how capitalism works.

For South Park, there is always the "Fantastic Easter Special" which mocks the absolute hell out of the Catholic Church, and Bill Donohue specifically. Having Donohue claim he is "the voice of God" and then literally order Jesus's death was hilarious. After all, it's not like Donohue could possibly find his depiction positive...

Wikipedia posted:

Asked about that, Mr. Donohue walked to a frame, prominently displayed on a shelf, containing a still from the 2007 episode of the animated television series “South Park” in which Mr. Donohue was parodied: In the picture, Mr. Donohue is shown wearing the pope’s tall hat, his unmistakable receding hairline and square-framed black glasses captured, uncannily, by the pen of the artist.

“In the episode, they have me overthrow the pope because the pope is a wimp, and then I take over the church and give it some guts,” he said, making a fist.

Pope Donohue also sentences Jesus to death for heresy. Mr. Donohue does not mention that.

“But in the end, Jesus kills me,” Mr. Donohue said with a jolly laugh.

So I Googled Galt's Gulch and found out that it exists! It's in Chile (since it is apparently the most economically free country in South America. Thanks Pinochet!) and instead of magical metal, they grow lemons.
"Galt's Gulch" has always sounded retarded to me just by the name. I've seen gulches around Texas and in the desert on vacation, so I know exactly what a Gulch looks like.

Here's the Wikipedia definition, because I'm lazy:

Wikipedia posted:

In xeric lands [desert, usually defined as less than 250 mm of annual precipitation], a gulch is a deep V-shaped valley formed by erosion. It may contain a small stream or dry creek bed and is usually larger in size than a gully. Sudden intense rainfall upstream may produce flash floods in the bed of the gulch.
So it's a creek bed in the desert. If it's a dry creek bed, nothing can live there. Since people have to live in this Gulch, that means there's water, which means you have to deal with flash floods possibly destroying everything when it rains hard. Flash floods are more common than you'd think in the desert, because there's little to no soil to absorb rainfall. So you're in the middle of the desert, where it's hot as hell in the day, freezing at night, with little to no rainfall, no shade, little food, and poisonous animals. Your only source of water is the creek bed, and the little rain you need for crops runs the risk of washing you, your home, and everything you have away in a flash flood.

No thank you, I don't want to live in a loving gulch.

King of the Hill's politics are kind of hard to nail down. The show goes after liberals like in the above-mentioned examples but Mega-Lo-Mart is a pretty harsh criticism of the effect Walmart has had on small communities, and there was an episode that lampooned and criticized evangelical megachurches. My friend told me that there was a late season episode with a remarkable non-lovely moral about gentrification but I haven't seen it. And it's not on Netflix anymore :(
There was also an episode (looking it up, it was called "Hilloween") that completely tore into Evangelical Christians and "Hell Houses". The antagonist of that episode is a super Evangelical Christian woman; think "Halloween is a satanic holiday", "anyone who celebrates it goes to Hell", "satanists are everywhere", all that crap.

Basically, Hank just wanted to have fun doing a haunted house on Halloween, and have Bobby go trick-or-treating, but the evangelical woman leads a crusade against Halloween and the "Satanists" and manages to get Halloween canceled. She also gets all the kids to go to her "Hallelujah House" instead, which is the whole nine yards of "sex before marriage leads to diseases and death", a family with an ape sitting at the table and the (strawman) father saying "Darwin said we were chimps, so meet your ape grandfather", and all that other stupid evangelical bullshit.

Hank hates it, so he dresses up in his old devil costume and leads a trick-or-treat protest against her, and basically all the parents join in and go get their kids from the Hell House, and go out trick-or-treating as families.

It's one of my favorite episodes actually, just because the evangelical lady is unambiguously presented as wrong; everyone hates Halloween getting canceled, and none of the kids have any fun at the Hell House before they're rescued by their parents. Oh, and part of how the woman gets Halloween cancelled is she claims that Satanists killed her cat, when in reality she ran it over herself because she was too preoccupied with her "crusade" against Halloween to even notice. (That poor cat.:()
