I'm using Not Created Equal and Hidden Potential in my current playthrough and I have a sniper that has aim almost as bad as a heavy and an assault that has the lowest movement of my group and has trouble hitting anything (both colonels). On the other hand both my colonel supports have such high movement that, when combined with the +3 movement skill, can literally run further than some of my dudes can dash. It seems like it just turns your sniper into a crappy support. What does snapshot really get me that gunslinger doesn't?
Whenever I read posts like this I always wonder why people with Snap Shot snipers are getting so close to the enemy that the close-in aim penalty starts to apply. Like, you guys realise that the aim penalty only starts to apply at around shotgun ranges right?

You can't crit with squadsight anymore, so opportunist is kind of wasted on squadsight snipers now. Sentinel, rapid reaction, and opportunist on a snapshot/ITZ sniper, on the other hand, sounds loving ridiculous. Kill 3 dudes, then overwatch for a possible two shots on two enemies.

And yeah, Training Roulette does kind of turn supports into rifles with smoke that can only fill their usual role if they get really, really lucky. Medkits take two perks to be really useful, and you'd need to have access to both to take one or the other.

edit: vvvv No, I still take it too, but only because executioner is just so utterly worthless on snipers (and in general, to be honest). Its only a "waste" in the sense that you really don't get much for that level.
I always saw the primary benefit of Opportunist as the getting rid of the -20 aim penalty from overwatching with the ability to crit as a side bonus.

Is there an easy way to make cover harder to destroy? I know it's possible (because a mod did it for Enemy Unknown), but I'm wondering if it's an .ini file edit to increase the "health" of terrain or whatever that I can do on my own. I had an assault behind full cover who used a shotgun to reaction-fire through a nearby waist-high window, destroy the entire wall in the process, and then get killed...because he no longer had cover. It's one thing if a rocket, grenade, or plasma cannon knocks down a wall, but it's sort of loving stupid when a shotgun or pistol or whatever does it, and then you're immediately punished for it.
I haven't tried it, but you should be able to change the iEnvironmentDamage setting for each weapon in DefaultGameCore.ini to make it harder to destroy cover.

Aiming Angles. How does it calculate?

If I'm X sat like so

...1.........2
..............
□□□□..........
...X..........

I can totally see that hostile 2 has a better shot, and aiming angles would allow for this. (formatting has screwed it a little, dude should be on edge cover on the wall here)

However the wording of the actual mechanic almost implies that he would get a lower penalty in this situation too.

...1.........2
..............
□□□□□□□□□□□□..
...X..........

Which doesn't make as much sense. Would he benefit?
I haven't tried aiming angles yet, but I would assume that shooter 2 does get a benefit simply because I doubt the devs thought to account for cover next to the piece you're hiding behind. Speaking of which, if anyone is curious about how aiming angles works on a base level this is from the ini:
code:
; Top down view
;
;     B
;      \
;       \
;  A-----^
;        T
;
; T is a target with cover in the direction of '^'.
; A is a shooter with the maximum aiming angle aim bonus
; B is a shooter with the minimum aiming angle aim bonus
; The aiming angle bonus increases linearly in the angle range between A and B
SW_AIMING_ANGLE_THRESHOLD=45.0f	; SW_AIMING_ANGLE_THRESHOLD defines the angle between segment TA and TB - its valid range is 0-90
SW_AIMING_ANGLE_MINBONUS=5		; Shooter B's aiming angle bonus is SW_AIMING_ANGLE_MINBONUS
SW_AIMING_ANGLE_MAXBONUS=-5		; Shooter A's aiming angle bonus is [T's Cover Bonus + SW_AIMING_ANGLE_MAXBONUS]
If I'm reading this right, you need a 45 degree angle before you start getting a bonus to hit, starting at +5 aim and ending at +15 versus light cover and +35 versus heavy cover. The bonus goes up linearly with the best bonus being one tile away from a flank.

Catsworth posted:
