as for the book, i picked it up at a u of oregon museum gift shop when i went up there for the eclipse. to be clear, it's got ~200 pages of art history and 'only' ~50 pages of appendix specifically on how to draw stuff, and i bet there's specific guides out there that are better for teaching how to do the art. but even in the art history part, the guy includes drawing guides of the basic figures in the examples of geometric art he shows, and i like the history of it too so i want to work through it that way

gently caress me why have I been saying 'climate change'??

I didn’t know about the political machinations behind the different terms, but I’ve preferred “climate change” because it fits more naturally with stuff like colder winters, more savage storms, and flooding than does “global warming”. warming is only one of the effects we care about, and is an intermediate causal step between “stuff we need to change” (carbonization and such) and “stuff we want to prevent” (lots of bad poo poo). better to focus the messaging on the actionable source and the full set of consequences, imo

A little bitdecent amount of anxiety about the logistics and initial acclimation period (especially for the girls), but mostly I am really happy that all four of us are going to be together as a family and get to share our lives more completely.

in Canada this is the program (I think different in Quebec?): https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/guide-private-sponsorship-refugees-program.html

most large cities here have groups that gather funds and such from a group of people to cover a sponsorship, or you can get with a private group and apply to do it. http://www.rstp.ca/en/ is a good start, I believe. I think it costs about $15,000 to sponsor a single refugee, or $30,000 for a family of four. I didn’t know about the program when they were pulling the financial contributions together, so I didn’t participate in that part this time. in-kind housing can count towards that amount at some standardized rate.

we had a big blackout here like 10 years ago, and ice cream places we’re giving stuff away, people were playing boardgames on the sidewalk by flashlight, and some dude came running out of an apartment building SCREAMING “she said yes!” over and over. the couple ended up getting carried on people’s shoulders into the park to fake a wedding or something.

a few months ago, a co-worker of mine had a brain aneurysm burst while she was at the gym, and she was rushed to the hospital. they did several hours of reportedly-invasive surgery to deal with a brain bleed and other things, and then she was in a coma. a few days later she came out of it and seemed lucid, but they’ve been watching closely.

yesterday her mother brought her by the office, in a wheelchair. she’s re-learning how to walk and dress and so forth, but the doctors say her recovery has been unbelievable. they now expect her to return to full function, and be able to continue working as a comptroller. (she was bantering with our accountant about the board deck for this week during her visit.) my girlfriend works in occupational therapy at a rehab hospital, with patients who are learning to adapt and re-learn after similar brain injuries, and she is blown away by the progress and outlook.

oh, and she’s pregnant. the baby is fine, and they’re having a girl this fall.
