What BSG needed (somewhat ironically) was a plan. Instead of just winging it for multiple seasons and ultimately writing themselves into an unsatisfying corner.

But enough about that, we have a new episode of Lower Decks to discuss! It wasn't the most eventful episode but I still had a smile on my face by the end of it. Boimler channelling Riker was great, and it was nice to see him saving the day without Mariner's involvement. The Pakleds continue to be the most ridiculous non-threatening threat to the Federation, and I loved how they kept calling Freeman "Janeway". I wasn't expecting an Armus callback, but that was fun too.

It's a crime this show only gets ten episode seasons.

Armus deserves to get pranked and I love it.

Distilled water at 100 degrees C is somewhat dangerous and I'm sure the replicator would allow it. Basically, if you microwave distilled water, you can end up with this situation where the first thing that disrupts the surface causes it to begin boiling. Violently.

Matching window heights yields a more reasonable size for the Cerritos and the Parliament class.

As long as the actor is recognizable through the Cardassian makeup, it works. That was one of the big problems with the new Klingons; I couldn't really tell the difference between them because of how much of their faces it covered.

It's a design that's definitely recognizably Cardassian, rather than the new Klingons which looked more like a take on the Klingons.

I can easily imagine how the Pakled Planet got blown up--they likely did it themselves using the second bomb, either by accident or through some absurd turn in their frequent revolutions. What I'm really interested in is how Freeman got implicated.

One thing I really liked over the course of this season is the cast gradually getting more recognition for their actions.

Apart from that, it felt like a an episode of one of the Star Wars cartoons. And I most certainly do not mean that in any negative way.

The eye thing is, for some reason, present all across New Trek. I don't think anybody knows why.

And yes, I also got a bit of a Star Wars feel too--I think it was the robots, but that wasn't a bad thing for me either. I don't think this will be my favorite but it's clearly a high quality production.

It's so much more usable than the holographic interfaces of Star Trek Picard where you vaguely gesture at thin unreadable transparent floating lines.

https://i.imgur.com/roUvn7r.mp4

And there's a really neat effect where it's semitransparent from behind but opaque from the front, so they can still do cool through-shots. It's super well thought out.

I do wish they didn't fall into the ALL FUTURE COMPUTERS MUST BE BLUE thing though.

People were suggesting that with the early cast list, but watching the episode actually stopped that doubt for me with things like Zero turning out to be Medusan. (And apparently Murf being a deep cut reference.). And there's a baked in mystery about these alpha quadrant species. And also from twitter the writer is clearly a massive trek nerd.

Yeah, I'm definitely a fan of the hovering holo-UI on the Protostar.

While Dal does have some real protagonist syndrome going on--I can see where he's coming from with a lot of his actions. Being suspicious and even contrarian towards Holo Janeway makes sense to me when he's a fugitive slave with no prior knowledge of the Federation. The way he talks about how a place like the Federation would give you the hard-sell when it's only good for the powerful is a view that is painfully true to the 21st century. He also has no reason to trust Holo Janeway since they stole the ship and he probably assumes that if Janeway smells something fishy there's some kinda theft protection.

Because they're doing it that loving poorly. At least it all feels wrong to me for reasons folks have already mentioned earlier in the thread. It feels like tokenization and that skeeves the poo poo out of me. Alright, so folks gotta understand: All this is really sensitive and can't be perfect for everyone, in terms of both representation and what we want to see in a Trek future. For some folks, a "perfect" transition is ideal but also this is a live action television show. I've seen people critique the scene where Adira, Grey, and Culber check over the holo of Grey's new body. Obviously, some trans folk, given the chance would change almost everything about themselves if given the chance that Grey is given here. But many wouldn't because they are happen with their body and how they look. Also, this is a live action television show and heavily changing stuff would mean changing the actor.

And I can't remember who said poo poo about "making the body physically male" but of course they're not gonna say "WHAT ABOUT THE DICK THOUGH???" That would be loving awful.

I wonder if the ship is still gonna be hosed up or still being repaired next episode. Either way I feel much more optimistic about this series, but I remember how Voyager largely discarded that idea of the ship getting continuously worn down very quickly, while Enterprise tried to make it a thing but it never really felt like they were pulling it off.

Gotta admit, the last three episodes of SNW have been so good after I was let down by the first episode, and this latest episode SO good that I'm kinda jonesing for more Star Trek and thinking about tracking down and catching up on Discovery after all. I forgot how Trek used to be so effective at getting its hooks into me, it's been so long since I saw a genuinely quality Trek series (DS9).

I figured the Enterprise being in drydock would be the excuse for next episode being apparently focused on Spock and his fiancee. They've got some time off to deal with personal junk.

God this was such a fun episode. Okay, so I'm a nonbinary trans woman (she/they), so when I realized Arden/Angel was gonna turn EVIL I felt a sense of dread because this could go either way (I mean, first enby character on the show being a deceptive villain? You gotta hit that perfectly) but they loving nailed it. They are glorious. I want to see Angel come back once a season to gently caress with the enterprise and maybe the occasional two-parter.

Also for folks who had trouble catching Angel's pronoun's on the first watch: I caught their enby vibes pretty much immediately, but I am also an enby with a lot of enby friends. However, I looked up the actor and was like "Oh, she/her pronouns? Maybe the character is the same?" So a little confusion is understandable.
