For my own sanity I don't want to go back into the comments to get screenshots or anything, but yesterday Wizards of the Coast announced it's removing a bunch of racist cards from the game. The reaction from many players has been....exactly what you're thinking it is, despite the fact that literally none of those cards are relevant anymore and no one plays them. Here's the twitter thread if you want I guess: https://twitter.com/wizards_magic/status/1270823164877189128

Either way you get pointless changes to a perfectly good UI/front end(with no option to roll back to an earlier version, of course, who would ever want that?????) rather than the under-the-hood improvements that users are actually begging for. Can confirm. Any time I've been at a company over a certain size, my meetings revolve around marketing people who feel like they need to make a certain quota of contributions to justify their paycheck. They think "it looks good as it is" is not an acceptable response to anything. I've had someone in a meeting request moving a button to a different part of a menu, then in the following meeting the same person requested we move it again....to exactly where it was originally, with absolutely no memory of their previous "idea". We'll have legit problems on the back end or mountains of tech debt to address, but it's important to "rebrand" every other month lately (my alma mater has rebranded their website twice in the past year, because another fun business trend: if you're not growing unbounded forever, you're a failure even if the numbers aren't going down either).

That's why I can't stand digging into poo poo from many years ago searching for something we consider offensive now. Things evolve and change, and expecting absolute perfection from everyone (against current standards) for their entire past is unrealistic. What matters is how one reacts to and acknowledges that past. Al does it right: you admit it's problematic and you didn't know at the time, you do better now.

To them Antifa is basically Spectre; there can't just exist a very large demographic loosely tied together by the idea that authoritarian white supremacists are bad.

Captain Monkey posted:It’s a fake oppression and they put it there themselves. Yesterday we stopped by a winery downtown we haven't been to in ages. As we're checking out this couple stopped outside the door and the guy pointed at the sign in the window saying "Please kindly wear a mask inside." Note it's not strictly mandatory, the owner said to us as we went in, "I'm vaccinated, if you are too and are comfortable removing your masks feel free, but we'll have to put them back on if someone else comes in." Got the vibe that they were on a date and the girl was not into it at all. We heard him say something to the effect of, "If they tell me to put on a mask...." and then proceeded to drag this poor girl inside. He walked around the entire store talking way too loudly and clearly trying to get us to look at him and say something; the girl kept shushing him and asking to leave. We all ignored him (and the owner switched our conversation over to talking about how much worse her great-grandmother had it in the 1918 pandemic) and he eventually just huffed and stormed out. They actively want to be "oppressed" so they can "fight for their freedom" by...yelling at the nicest older lady who owns this little shop

Ignoring that it's illegal in large parts of the country and obviously morally wrong, what the gently caress do you talk about with a 16 year old on a date in your late twenties? My default questions for teenagers when I have to talk to them is what classes they like (which I hatedgetting asked about when I was in high school). I'm guessing the 16 year old dating a 27 year old doesn't want to talk about school. I've reached that level of where I just can't deal with "kids" in their early 20s. I went back to grad school to do my PhD at 30 and the others starting the program fresh out of undergrad were 21, 22 tops. There's just a huge maturity gap where they don't have anything resembling perspective yet. They'd lose their mind over any assignments and how hard and unfair their life is because they had to supervise one whole physics lab each week so how could they ever find the time to do a handful of problems or a 4 page paper! I had a full time job and those weren't hardships. I get it, I'm sure I was just as bad if not worse at that age, but I quickly drifted away from that group (half of them straight up failed out after one semester anyway). Those were actual "adults" with college degrees, though. I hated teenagers when I was one, dating one sounds like a new level of hell.

I got similar poo poo somewhere last year when my partner and I finally got married. We were going to do it anyway, but on our own timeline; insurance forced us to move it up because they first made it as difficult as possible to insure a domestic partner then decided they just weren't going to cover that relationship anymore a few months later. I pointed out that I thought it was so asinine that as a domestic partner I had to get so much documentation to prove we've lived together and shared expenses for years (which would be nearly impossible even for a married couple to prove by their standards; who actually has both names on every bill they get?), yet as a spouse I just needed to check a box to say we were married; they did not actually verify this in any way, we didn't have to live together or have shared accounts or assets as was required for domestic partnership....nothing. It's just amazing the responses that came up. gently caress me for trying to point out that our gate-keeping system for who is allowed to be insured on a policy is completely arbitrary and pointless, I guess .
