TheMcD posted:Yeah, manual save and reload is the only way. In fact, the only way to actually avoid the civil war is to elect Curtis, negotiate with Reed and assassinate Long - with any other option, the civil war will kick off, and if you elected either Long or Reed, they will with 100% accuracy get kicked out by MacArthur. I'm definitely going to try this!

Trying to get the Reign of the Ancients mod installed for EU:Rome but it always crashed during startup, can anyone give a step-by-step instruction on what to do? All of the explanations I found were rather vague.

Party In My Diapee posted:The problem is that losing the civil war means game over. One of my fondest memories of a (modded) EU:Rome was when I conquered southern Italy, Greece and the Anatolian coastline as Pyrrhus of Epirus. Shortly after he died of old age his successor (I believe a grandson) also died leaving the throne to his mediocre brother. Pyrrhus' top general took the opportunity to try and take control of the kingdom and after a long and bloody war I had to concede defeat leaving me with a new dynasty with a new ruler with god-like stats. EU:Rome had a lot of issues but that game was one of my favourite Paradox game runs ever.

Jazerus posted:people seem to be very sick of this, and paradox's own success has made these early releases even more detrimental to a new game's success. why would i pay to play a beta when there are several other paradox games that are fully fleshed out from years of development and which i already own? Tbf this was also Paradox's MO before CK2. That game and EU4 were pretty much exceptions when it came to stable releases.

You both seem to be misunderstanding me a bit, I still play Darkest Hour and Victoria 2 regularly and can definitely see merits in both of those games that are somewhat lacking in later titles. Paradox has definitely grown as a developer however and it sometimes frustrates me that its not appreciated more by a significant portion of the fanbase. Victoria 2 especially would've ended up way better under Paradox's new post-launch support.

ilitarist posted:Pretty sure it would. But I'm not sure modern Paradox would ever put arcane systems like POP promotions or world market in a game today. Or systems that beg for Excel UI like country influence. And I don't think Victoria 2 would have a cult following with systems that are made in a way you can't tell wether they work or not. As I said, old Paradox definitely had their merits. It does make me curious how Victoria 3 will turn out.

To do this it sacrifices things like "good UI", "sanity", and "good game design" and honestly the worldbuilding is more fun than the mod will ever be.
