Can I take a moment to complain about Trump's order to reject any attempt to block the construction of mines on the moon from the end of the last thread? Because despite what scifi authors like to talk about, the moon's composition makes it a pretty bad choice for space mining. Most wannabe space miners look more to asteroids where there's a good selection of metallic ones that are easier to get to with way more payoff.

I know it's because some idiot got a bug up their butt and Trump saw a chance to look like a strong man again, but the depths of stupidity from this administration is weird.

Everyone is looking for the corruption angle on this because there's always a corruption angle on Trump, but the simpler answer is that lovely reporting of a fake study got a ton of attention because the news media has no loving clue how to report on science and health topics, then Trump latched onto it as a quick fix for his problems. Pizza might have pushed for it after the media latched onto it, but there doesn't need to be a trail of people who told Trump about hydroxychloroquine because it was all over television and we know he doesn't do anything except watch that.

Trump is touting that he's making oil prices go up because it makes his oil industry friends happy. He doesn't care what the average person wants and never did.

A smart politician would bring up things like, "Yes, gas prices are low, but they're so low that they're hurting people like this totally [not] random sampling of blue collar oil workers who just happened to turn up here at the White House for this photo op. And that's why we have a target price for oil that we want to maintain." It's not impossible to sell intentionally raising gas prices as a good thing, especially when a 20% increase is still "really cheap" in people's minds. Trump's just very bad at this.

So the options are crashing the oil production in the country or raising gas prices during mass unemployment?

Legitimately yes though that's reducing it to the most basic level. Energy policy is a delicate balancing act at the best of times and that's before you include the international diplomacy aspect of it. There's no good answers here and we haven't even factored in the environmental issues.

I guess I should mention that I full expect both Saudi Arabia and Russia to make statements soon that say, "We don't know what the gently caress Trump is talking about," since announcing he's made a deal when he hasn't done jack poo poo is one of Trump's favorite moves. Trump doesn't have any leverage in this situation and can't even play with the levers that presidents usually have.

One thing to keep in mind in these "Trump declares things that he has absolutely no control over" situations that he does have one power he use: the prestige of his office. Obviously that's going to mean jack poo poo to a state with a democratic governor, the desire to go along with what Trump says is going to carry weight in shithole states. The positive side of this is that going along with what Trump wants is a surefire way to burn your own house down. That's a bit of a negative, too, though.

It's just which regional bottling company has the license. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a few more soda brands like that, but Dr. Pepper is the only one that I know of. Maybe 7up, however since Sprite is a Coke brand it's not like they're going to get bottled by Coke.

There needs to be a serious inquiry into WHO's handling of the early stages of COVID-19 and possibly retooling the organization so they're more insulated from pressures that would encourage them to downplay situations. I don't know if that's going to happen with Trump working hard to poison the well and eliminate any US influence over the body, though.

No real evidence of any kind, from what I can tell. Can anyone tell me differently?

Example:

Serious answer is no, the actual cost of materials is only a portion of the price of gas. But since there might be some storage space left for gasoline, there's a real possibility of cranking out more gas while that's cheap .80 to .90 a gallon is a real possibility.

They already did that about a month ago paying a bit above market rate for oil.

I don't know if the strategic reserve was full after that first bailout, but if it isn't after yesterday then someone hosed up. That limits good options here other that direct bailout.

On the "positive" side of things, the oil industry actually does employ a ton of people and is central to the economies of a lot of states. So a bailout in this case actually has a chance of helping people. But bailing out some of the wealthiest companies on earth who are actively killing everyone on the planet isn't great...
