Universal pre-K and community college? :eyepop:

universal pre-k feels like it would be such a sea change moment. my mother in part chose her career path based on which employers provided low cost daycare, because it was the only way she would be able to work. and that was decades ago, i have to imagine the situation for parents is even worse now

on a separate note, it is very disappointing to see the white house pushing for a four year extension of the child tax credits rather than making them permanent. seems like they want to use it as a cudgel during the election, but that's playing with fire. we need to lock in as much as possible for as long as possible right now, it's a major risk to assume they'll be any window for governance after this session of congress

Larry Kudlow went on Fox either last night or the night before and invented this claim about 90% red-meat reduction and "plant-based beers". Nobody seems to have asked him what the hell kind of meat beers he was used to.

The Fox graphic gives a hint: it is, in fact, from the University of Michigan. Kudlow appears to have googled something like "emissions red meat", and found IMPLICATIONS OF FUTURE US DIET SCENARIOS ON GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS. The paper presents four scenarios and provides projections for diet-based emissions for each of them; scenario 4 describes a 51% reduction in diet-based emissions if Americans reduce their red meat intake by 90%. (I have to assume that he got the number of pounds per year from the number of the scenario, since the paper specifically states that a 90% reduction would still leave Americans eating 50.1 pounds of beef a year.)

It is worth noting that the paper was published in January 2020 and has nothing to do with Joe Biden, the federal government, or the Green New Deal, and that while it presents a possible partial solution for the US's commitment to reduce emissions, it does not make any recommendations, let alone any binding regulations.

i'm sorry, is this implying that the average american is eating over 500 lb of beef a year or over 1.37 lbs of beef a day? that can't be possible, i refuse to believe it

edit: okay, quick googling shows that some wires getting crossed somewhere. no way does a 90% reduction leave us at 50 lbs a year, based on who you're asking it's somewhere in the range of 5-9 lbs a year

Has there been any attempts to address the fact that man of the perpetrators of recent anti-Asian violence have been ethnic minorities themselves? I do not see it mentioned anywhere, particularly in liberal and leftist spaces. I was even probated in an earlier version of this thread for even suggesting it. Many of the attacks against Asian-Americans committed in the last seven days were committed by demonstrably non-white assailants. I don't have an agenda I'm attempting to push here other than the fact that this feels like a form of outright "erasure" as people often put it.

I am particularly frustrated by online discourse which seems fixated on the idea that this is attributable to Trump, and, or white supremacy. White supremacist violence is quite deadly and is of a more institutionalized form but none of that addresses the fact that all of the discourse I've seen around the internet is totally inadequate when it comes to addressing anti-Asian violence in the U.S.

This is all to say nothing of the fact that the idea that all racist violence is inherently rooted in white supremacy is ridiculous and can only be rooted in historical ignorance, yet I see this asserted again and again. I often see it suggested that racism and violence between distinct "non-white" ethnic groups in the U.S. can only be explained through the prism of white supremacy, as if non-whites are inherently incapable of racism against one another without it being inculcated by white supremacist ideology. I myself am of Asian-origin and I am beyond frustrated with the total disinterest in addressing this notion. Also I fully expect to be pilloried and probated for even raising this notion. Be well, stay safe.

maybe, just maybe, the systemic racism that pervades every part of the super structure of america has some role in fomenting racial tensions between minority groups

i know my family's history, and i know that white supremacy has done more to threaten our lives and livelihoods than whatever mealy mouthed whataboutism you're trying to push

musk had previously announced tesla would accept bitcoin as payment and would buy up a significant holding of bitcoin to facilitate this, which helped spur the market to new highs

the most recent tesla quarterly report showed that tesla had sold off a large chunk of its bitcoin holding during those highs. tesla's positive profits for the first quarter of the year (which are tied into huge incentive payments to musk) relied heavily on this sale

now they are ending the payment program on what seems to be a flimsy pretext, information on the environmental impacts of bitcoin which was wildly known and reported on before they began the program

even leaving aside musk's potential holdings in rival cryptocurrencies, this seems like a classic pump and dump scheme which was done to juice quarterly profits and get musk one step closer to unlocking a new tranche of stock options
