The common sense statement of “asking certain questions / repeating certain arguments can be a harmful act” clashes with the core tenant of d&d being “positions are not moderated / arguments are all valid as long as you’re representing your beliefs accurately” so this line of criticism isn’t going to go far unfortunately. Blatant bigotry’ll get hit but since we’re all humans other actions depend on whether the posts in question harsh the vibes of the particular thread(s) involved rather than analysis of the position.

What questions or arguments are you referring to here, that shouldn't be allowed by common sense, aren't blatant bigotry (since that gets hit), but are allowed anyway?

Yeah for real. There was nothing wrong with the majority of posting and posters in the CCCC thread. Closing it because moderation is so piss poor seems like punishment toward the posters when the moderation was the issue.

As someone who got hounded out of it, the community that tolerates continuous bad faith lies about other posters. Defending yourself doesn't help if you aren't a member of the clique.

It was genuinely ugly. YMB would just harass and lie over and over, and people would either say nothing or cheerlead.

Nice edit but too late

You didn't get hounded out. You left voluntarily. Twice. Nobody told you to leave. You stopped posting in a huge huff because we cracked huge holes in your ideology over and over and instead of reconsidering your ideology and worldview you doubled down every time and always always always always got lost in nitpicking the definition of specific words.

The definition of specific words matters. Like here, for example:

hounded; hounding; hounds. transitive verb. : to pursue with or as if with hounds. : to drive or affect by persistent harassing

Or maybe "to force somebody to leave a job or a place, especially by making their life difficult and unpleasant"

I am saying I was persistently harassed. It drove me away. I came back because someone literally reached out and mentioned that people in the thread were saying they wished I'd come back.

When I did, it was a lot quieter, way more hostile, with less of what made it fun and way more harassment.

HYL is right, it got to me.

Elephant Ambush posted:

That or you did the "quote where I said those specific words" thing when someone paraphrased you when the specific words didn't actually matter in discerning your position on any given issue

Yeah, there was a lot of "so you're saying 'xyz thing that I didn't say'?" so I did a lot of correcting people.

I'm not going to respond to the rest of your diatribe since it doesn't really seem the place for it, but maybe I'm wrong, I don't really know the vibe here yet.

You didn't change my worldview because your arguments suck.

I would currently oppose use of the Rules in the forums; they're designed entirely for contemporaneous, verbal proceedings and are ill-suited to the forums medium. Any use of the Rules would require extensive revisions, and while I do have a modified ruleset that could be further adapted for Something Awful's use, I think the time investment would be better applied elsewhere. Additionally, a significant debate would immediately ensue about which edition of the Rules to use. Setting aside the scrublord "in brief" editions for dummies, there's a lot of controversy about changes in the 10th edition that have moved forward since the schism with the 7th edition in 1970. The full 12th edition is also relatively expensive and is arguably an inappropriate cost to expect many users to read.

However, in the event that the forum does choose to move to the Rules, I have a set of extensively annotated editions I can send to moderators as needed. I do have a personal copy of the 10th edition that I've modified and cut down for civic meetings which may be appropriate for public moderation deliberations.

I have an alternative proposal involving a merged Argdown and Loomio concept I developed a while back for the Nebraska unicameral, but I'll wait for a separate motion for that to be considered.

I move that DV be given a wedgie.

Imagine knowing that by so many socioeconomic indicators these people are still being affected by the genocidal policy, and posting that it’s conspiritorial thinking to not trust the government.

I’m kinda rocked to my core. I can only imagine that having a job working on lands of people who have in living memory unceasing tales of being lied to, cheated, robbed and murdered by the government that it would make me more the way I am.

Genuine heartfelt desire to understand what has happened here, how a person arrives here.

You literally stayed up because you couldn't understand why someone could realize the US government has done horrible things in the past (including the very recent past!), but still believe the EPA about contamination levels after the East Palestine derailment (after looking at the data they're collecting and publishing, and without evidence they're lying or obscuring something)?

What I've seen is people posting data and saying "this seems reasonable so far" and others saying "capitalism ruins everything" and "someone on Twitter is posting about dead fish". It's data vs. tummyfeels.

Blindly trusting the EPA is dumb, so go through the data or talk to an expert in the field who has and see what issues there are.
